The plan of this tale suggested itself to the writer many years since, though the details are altogether of recent in-vention. The idea of associating seamen and savages in incidents that might be supposed characteristic of the Great Lakes having been mentioned to a Publisher, the latter obtained something like a pledge from the Author to carry out the design at some future day, which pledge is now tardily and imperfectly redeemed.

The Pathfinder, or The Inland Sea is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper first published in 1840. It is the fourth novel featuring Natty Bumppo, his fictitious frontier hero, and is considered as forming the third chronological episode of the Leatherstocking Tales. Natty, in this novel commonly called the Pathfinder, keeps in a hardy middle age his simple and honest nature, which is severely tested by his love for a young girl. She is a conventional heroine of romance.

The Pioneers The Sources of the Susquehanna; a Descriptive Tale is a historical novel, the first published of the Leatherstocking Tales, a series of five novels by American writer James Fenimore Cooper. The story takes place on the rapidly advancing frontier of New York State and features an elderly Leatherstocking Natty Bumppo, Judge Marmaduke Temple of Templeton whose life parallels that of the authors father Judge William Cooper, and Elizabeth Temple based on the authors sister, Hannah Cooper, daughter of the fictional Templeton. The story begins with an argument between the judge and Leatherstocking over who killed a buck.
